Objective

Design and build a prototype to prevent a disease (radiation). I focused on touch, specifically the hands. Over the course of a few weeks I designed and built a glove that protects against radiation. The glove uses traditional methods of blocking radiation, such as shielding (lead). Lead is woven into the palm of the the glove, but for the fingers a Demron lining is necessary. This affords the dexterity that conventional gloves lack. By combining old and new technologies I get the benefit of both.

Project 2: A Quarantine Unit

In this next project I'm building a structure to protect against radiation. I will be applying the methods of protection that I looked at in Project 01a, as well as some new ones. So far this project is the development stage; with various process models and diagrams. For the most part I have decided to create a bunker in our site (New Orleans River Front area). Like traditional bunkers this one will be underground, but building underground in New Orleans presents its own problems. The City for the most part happens to be below sea level, which means possible flooding for any hole dug on the site. Instead of trying to keep the water out I will intentionally flood the area around the bunker. Using a combination of earth and water to protect the structure.

The Bunker

The design of the bunker is primarily a spiral in the ground. Why a spiral? A bunker needs to be in earth for protection, the deeper in the earth you go the better protected you are. The shape of a spiral goes deeper and deeper into the ground, but doesn't require a network of ladders or stairs to get up and down. The space of the bunker provides two roles; it is a space to live but it also goes deeper into the ground the further you walk.

The center of the spiral will be vacant to provide for a source of light, but there will also be a pool of water in the center. The water gives protection against the radiation, but can also be used to treat waste and even generate electricity. The water can act like the life blood of the bunker.
